West Ham wants to bid for 'local boy' Beckham

West Ham co-owner David Gold has said that he wants to bring England and AC Milan midfielder David Beckham back to East London.

Gold believes that if Leytonstone-born Beckham, who is currently recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, considers a return to England then West Ham would like to have the legend in their squad.

"David keeps on showing he still has so much to offer and if he's available then we want to be bidding. It's not only a case of what he can do on the pitch, but what he does off it - he'd be a sensational ambassador for his home-town club," News of the World quoted Gold, as saying.

"He's a local boy like the two owners and this could appeal to him. It's not fanciful as he has so much to offer. His arrival would be massive," he added.

Meanwhile, Gold has agreed to the terms of the pay-off for defender Calum Davenport and said: "This shows we are a club that honours contracts to the letter. It's terribly sad that this has happened to the lad but occasionally life can throw such stuff at you and its horrible."

"This decision wipes the slate clean and allows him to get on with his life again and everybody at the club wishes him well," Gold added. (ANI)
